Football fans gearing up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup might not realise the tournament could become a major target for cyber attacks. Experts at King's College London are sounding the alarm, warning that the global event could be a "single point of failure" for hackers.

A 'Spectacle' for Hackers

Dr Aybars Tuncdogan, a cyber security expert at King’s Business School, says the tournament, spanning the US, Canada, and Mexico, is an unusually attractive target. The sheer global visibility and cultural significance mean any disruption could have a massive impact.

"It’s a large spectacle. Everybody’s watching it. If you affect one system, you can have a wide-scale impact. It becomes almost like a temporary single point of failure," Dr Tuncdogan explained. He added that modern hacktivism is often linked to political agendas, meaning attacks could aim to disrupt more than just systems.

The Evolving Threat Landscape

The World Cup's complex network of ticketing, stadium infrastructure, and broadcasting makes it vulnerable. Dr Tuncdogan highlighted that advances in AI are making attacks easier and more sophisticated. However, he stressed that basic security flaws are still a major problem.

"Most of the time, attackers are focusing on low-hanging fruit," he said, pointing to weak passwords and poor system management. He advocates for "ambidextrous cybersecurity," a balance between routine defence and proactive threat hunting. The goal is not just to stop attacks, but to maintain public trust in the digital systems we rely on.
