Bexley Council raises concerns over Thameslink service reductions

June 6, 2026

Bexley Council has formally expressed its concerns to the Secretary of State for Transport regarding proposed cuts to Thameslink services affecting local stations this summer. Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Infrastructure, Councillor Cameron Smith, has written to Heidi Alexander, the Secretary of State, outlining the potential negative impacts on Bexley residents and businesses.

The council has stated that it received no formal communication from the newly nationalised Govia Thameslink Railway operator regarding the decision to reduce services. The proposed timetable changes will reportedly halve the frequency of trains calling at Bexley stations on the Luton to Rainham line, reducing them to one train per hour.

Impact on Residents and Businesses

Councillor Smith's letter highlights that the Thameslink service directly connects Slade Green and Abbey Wood stations to destinations including Medway towns and Luton. While Southeastern services will continue to operate, residents travelling beyond central London or further into Medway may face significantly longer journeys. The council also anticipates potential increases in road congestion and illegal parking in Bexley, particularly given the popularity of the Elizabeth Line. Improving public transport connections to Abbey Wood is seen as crucial, especially with limited car parking capacity at the station and parking pressures on nearby residential streets.

The council expressed disappointment that the initial action following the nationalisation of Govia Thameslink Railway appears to be a reduction in services for the borough. Hopes had been expressed by residents for the Thameslink service to be extended to additional local stations, such as Belvedere and Erith.

Economic Growth Concerns

Furthermore, the council argues that cutting train services during the summer months is detrimental to the local economy, particularly for retail, leisure, and hospitality businesses across Greater London. Bexley's economic growth strategy relies on frequent and reliable public transport links between London and Kent, with Thameslink forming a key part of this offering. The council stated its opposition to any cuts to these services.

Councillor Smith is urging the Secretary of State to reconsider the decision to halve Thameslink services this summer and is seeking assurances that these reductions will not become permanent. The council also requests that the Department for Transport outline its plans for investment in this rail corridor to improve connectivity. The letter concludes by expressing a desire for a meeting to discuss these matters further, alongside broader transport infrastructure plans, including the expansion of the DLR into Bexley and the extension of the Elizabeth Line to Ebbsfleet.
