Bexley Council has partnered with ubitricity, a leading electric vehicle (EV) charging operator, to install 400 new EV charge points throughout the borough. This initiative aims to support residents who lack the ability to charge EVs at home and contributes to the council's commitment to reducing emissions and improving air quality.
The new charge points have been integrated into existing residential lamp posts, minimising street clutter and avoiding pavement obstructions. This approach ensures that charging facilities are conveniently located for residents. All installations feature ubitricity’s Shell Smart Charging software, designed to help drivers reduce charging costs by utilising cheaper tariff periods.
The charge points offer an affordable public charging solution, with off-peak charging available between 12 am and 7 am at a rate of 44p per kWh. This allows residents to charge their vehicles overnight at a reduced cost, plugging in close to their homes.
Councillor Cameron Smith, Bexley’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Infrastructure, stated that the new charging points will simplify EV charging in Bexley and provide a smart charging option for cost savings. He added that the partnership with ubitricity ensures that charging infrastructure meets the borough's needs as EV adoption increases. Stuart Wilson, UK Managing Director of ubitricity, expressed pride in the collaboration, highlighting how integrating chargers into existing streetlights makes charging accessible directly outside residents' homes and encourages greater EV uptake.
Residents can locate their nearest ubitricity charge point via the ubitricity website by entering their address. Payment can be made using a Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) system by scanning the QR code on the charge point or through the ubitricity website.
