The committee's investigation will focus on how the concentration of outlets such as fast-food restaurants, vape stores, and betting shops affects residents' health. Data indicates that 58.5% of Londoners reside in neighbourhoods with a high density of these businesses, a figure nearly triple the England average of 20.9%. This situation is compounded by poor air quality in many of these areas. The meeting aims to gather evidence on effective strategies and necessary changes to foster healthier high street environments.

Boroughs and the Mayor's role in promoting healthier high streets

Discussions will also encompass the actions undertaken by London boroughs, the Mayor, businesses, and community groups to promote healthier environments. The committee will consider how the Mayor's new London Plan might assist councils in this endeavour and identify further steps to improve the health outcomes associated with London's high streets. Representatives from the Royal Society of Public Health, NHS England, Centre for London, and the London Borough of Bexley are scheduled to provide evidence. Experts from the Greater London Authority and the London Borough of Brent will also participate in the discussions.

The meeting, open to media and the public, will be held at City Hall and will be available to view via live webcast or on YouTube.
