Lambeth Council has formally commenced the process of creating a new Local Plan, a crucial document that will shape the borough's development for the next 15 years. Councillor Scott Ainslie, Lambeth's Cabinet Member for Planning and Development, Built Environment, and Public Realm, emphasised the importance of valuing the borough's distinct character and rich cultural heritage, stating, "It is vital that we value and protect Lambeth’s distinct character and rich cultural heritage and make this a welcoming and truly affordable borough where residents are proud to live." The council intends to go "above and beyond" to engage with seldom-heard voices, empowering all residents to participate in shaping the plan.

Community Consultation and Timeline

Work on developing the Local Plan with Lambeth's communities is set to begin in September 2026. An initial six-week consultation will be held to gather views on the plan's focus and resident involvement. This engagement will be conducted both online and offline, with specific efforts to involve young people, reflecting Lambeth's status as a UNICEF UK Child Friendly Community. Further community conversations are planned over the next 24 months, with the adoption of the new Local Plan anticipated in Spring 2029. Key milestones include the formal notice of the plan's commencement in July 2026, scoping consultations in September-October 2026, and subsequent consultations on the plan's content and proposals in July-August 2027 and July-August 2028 respectively. The current Local Plan was adopted in September 2021, and local plans are legally required to be reviewed and updated every five years.
