The situation on Ivy Road is not isolated; Lewisham has seen a dramatic increase in fly-tipping incidents. The borough recorded over 43,000 reported incidents between July 2025 and June 2026, marking a 25% rise in just one year. This places Lewisham among the worst-affected boroughs in England for illegal dumping. The council has acknowledged the severity of the problem, launching a "Cleaner Streets Programme" and mobilising new bulky waste and fly-tipping crews in July 2026 to target hotspots.

Lewisham Council has taken steps to combat fly-tipping, including increasing the maximum fixed penalty notice for offenders from £400 to £1,000 in April 2025. Despite these measures, the recurring nature of the fly-tipping on Ivy Road suggests that enforcement and prevention efforts need to be more effective in this specific location.
