Lambeth Council has officially listed Brixton Village and Market Row as an Asset of Community Value (ACV), granting the community legal rights to bid for the properties should they come up for sale. This designation provides enhanced protections for the iconic covered markets, which have been a focal point for Brixton's diverse communities for generations.

Enhanced Protections for Brixton's Heart

The decision by Lambeth Council follows an application lodged by the Stour Trust, an organisation that supports community campaigns for buildings of local importance. The ACV status means that if Brixton Village and Market Row are put on the market, the community will have a six-month window to organise and submit a bid to purchase them. This measure aims to safeguard the heritage and cultural significance of the markets, ensuring they remain in local hands.

Councillor Martin Abrams, Leader of Lambeth Council, expressed strong support for the campaign, stating, "This is a big step forward for the campaign for community ownership which aims to safeguard Brixton’s heritage, and I am pleased the council has swiftly taken this important step." He highlighted the markets as the "beating heart of Brixton," valued by diverse communities and shaped by generations of traders, creatives, and entrepreneurs. The council's approval of the application is seen as a crucial opportunity for community action to preserve this cherished local asset.

Historical Significance and Community Value

Brixton Village, originally known as Granville Arcade, was built in 1937, while Market Row was constructed in 1928. Both structures are architecturally significant, featuring curved steel truss roof structures that illuminate the avenues. Historically, Brixton's markets have played a vital role in the area's social history, becoming a central focal point for London's Afro-Caribbean community, particularly since the post-World War II era. The markets have adapted over the years, reflecting the local community's influences and are now renowned for their global food offerings.

The designation as an Asset of Community Value is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to protect Brixton's unique cultural identity. This status, granted under the Localism Act 2011, empowers communities to nominate and protect local assets that hold significant social, cultural, or recreational value.
