South London dementia care at The White House Nursing Home in New Malden has been rated outstanding by the CQC.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has re-rated The White House Nursing Home as outstanding following an inspection in February. This rating applies to services supporting residents across South London.
The home provides accommodation, nursing, and personal care for up to 36 older people. It specialises in supporting those living with dementia, as well as individuals with mental health needs, sensory needs, and physical disabilities.
Catriona Eglinton, CQC deputy director of adult social care in south London, stated: “When we inspected The White House Nursing Home, we found a service that hadn’t only maintained the high standards seen at its previous inspection but had continued to build on them. This reflects the dedication and consistency of the leaders and staff team over the years.”
What stood out was the depth of understanding staff had for each person. They knew people’s histories, preferences, and routines. This knowledge was used to provide care that was truly personalised and respectful.
Staff supported people to try new experiences and build confidence. For example, one person was supported to attend the circus and the seaside. This demonstrated how staff worked creatively to make personal goals possible.
The service created an environment reflecting its commitment to people’s needs. Dementia-friendly corridors and personalised bedroom doors were implemented. Activities were planned to ensure people living with dementia could participate fully.
The service worked well with partners. Staff collaborated with a GP to support a person living with dementia to reduce their use of antipsychotic medicines. This resulted in the individual becoming more engaged and enjoying meals more.
“All of the staff at The White House Nursing Home should be really proud of the exceptional care they delivered,” Ms Eglinton added. “Other services should look at this report as an example of outstanding practice, to promote improvements across the sector and to support people to lead their best lives.”
Inspectors found the home participated in research and innovation. This included using digital tools for activities and remote health monitoring. Staff managed medicines safely, with no recorded errors in the six months prior to inspection.
Leaders supported staff and created a positive working environment. This helped retain staff and provide continuity of care. Staff received training in dementia care and worked effectively with specialist health professionals.
