The Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People has marked a significant milestone with its opening ceremony. The event brought together young people, donors, and partners involved in its development.

The pioneering new Centre is located at the Maudsley Hospital site. It aims to unite clinical and scientific expertise to transform mental health support for children and young people.

Professor Philip Shaw, Director of the King’s Maudsley Partnership, stated, "I have an immense feeling of pride at the sight of the Pears Maudsley Centre opening its doors." He added, "It is the home of the Partnership, created to revolutionise how we understand and help children and young people living with mental health conditions."

Innovation and collaboration at the new centre

The ceremony showcased current work within the Partnership. This included demonstrations of Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and a VR headset for managing emotional dysregulation.

Dr Bruce Clark, the Trust’s CAMHS Clinical Director, commented, "The challenges facing young people’s mental health today are numerous and it’s vital that we, as clinicians and researchers, are as well-equipped as we can be to meet them head on." He also highlighted the importance of collaboration with donors and young people.

Sarah Holloway, Chief Executive of Maudsley Charity, announced, "We have given £10m - our largest ever grant to date - towards the creation of this building." She expressed excitement for the innovations in treatment and care that will occur within the Centre.

Ade Odunlade, Interim Chief Executive of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, stated, "The Pears Maudsley Centre represents a symbol of change, hope for the future and a commitment that we are putting children’s mental health on top of the agenda." The Centre is expected to influence healthcare settings globally.

Professor Shitij Kapur, Vice-Chancellor & President of King’s College London, remarked, "This Pears Maudsley Centre reflects the very best of what we can achieve when universities, health services, charities and philanthropists work together in service of society." The Centre is anticipated to make a significant difference for years to come.

The Centre is scheduled to become fully operational in early 2027. This opening ceremony is the first in a series of celebrations.
