South London: Pears Maudsley Centre opens for young people's mental health

May 7, 2026

South London's Pears Maudsley Centre opens, marking a significant step for young people's mental health services.

New Centre for Child and Adolescent Mental Health

The first Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) teams have relocated to the Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People. The Centre for Interventional Paediatric Psychopharmacology and Rare Diseases (CIPPRD) team was among the first to move in. Crisis Line, Response, and Bed Management teams are also scheduled to transition next week.

Charlotte Laxton, CAMHS Senior Business Planning Manager, stated, "It's a really exciting time. It's been a long time in the making and teams are getting really excited." CAMHS teams will continue to move in throughout May, bringing the new building to life. King's College London colleagues and the Clinical Research Facility will occupy their spaces later in the year.

State-of-the-Art Facility Designed for Young People

The Pears Maudsley Centre is designed to be a vibrant and welcoming environment. It incorporates natural light, outdoor spaces, artwork, and soft furnishings to help alleviate anxiety for young service users. This initiative is more than just a new building; it represents a new chapter in mental health care.

The centre's development was made possible by a £10m donation from Maudsley Charity, alongside contributions from other donors. This funding supports the King’s Maudsley Partnership for Children and Young People. This partnership unites the Trust's specialist clinicians with academics from King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience.

Charlotte Laxton added, "It's a state-of-the-art building and I think it's impressive when you look at it. We're looking forward to young people and their families coming in, seeing the collaboration between young people, clinical and research and hopefully they experience that when they are accessing this new space." The aim is to transform the understanding and treatment of young people's mental health.
