Bromley Council invests in libraries, leisure centres and housing

Bromley Council is undertaking a series of regeneration projects across the borough, with a focus on enhancing community facilities and providing new affordable housing. The council has reported the refurbishment of eight libraries, with a new central library set to open on Bromley High Street later this year. These revitalised spaces are intended to host a range of community events.

Leisure Centre Upgrades and Housing Development

Significant investment is also being channelled into the borough's leisure centres. The Walnuts leisure centre is scheduled to reopen shortly after Easter, featuring a competition-length swimming pool, an upgraded gym, new exercise studios, a sauna, steam room, a children's pool, and a café. Work is also progressing on improvements in West Wickham, which will include a larger gym and a competition-length pool.

In terms of housing, a 75-unit affordable housing development is nearing completion in Bromley North, adjacent to the train station. This project is part of the "Bromley Homes for Bromley People" programme, aimed at creating new affordable housing on brownfield sites.

Community Services and Environmental Initiatives

Bromley Council has also highlighted progress in social initiatives and environmental efforts. The council states it has made substantial progress in tackling loneliness, with residents reporting high levels of social contact. The council's Officer Loneliness Champion was recognised with an MBE for services to tackling loneliness. Furthermore, the council has opened a new home for children in care, aiming to keep young people closer to their support networks.

In the environmental sector, Bromley Council reports it is leading London in recycling. The Waldo Road facility is undergoing modernisation to ensure its future functionality and is expected to reopen by early autumn. The council also continues its efforts to combat fly-tipping, with a recent closure order obtained for Walden Farm, addressing illegal waste disposal activities on Green Belt land.
