King's College London Innovation Hub Gets Royal Visit

May 12, 2026

Imagine a future where your cancer treatment is perfectly tailored to you, analysed in real-time. That's the vision being brought to life at King's College London's pioneering Innovation Hub, which today welcomed His Majesty the King.

A Royal Tour of Cancer Breakthroughs

The King's visit to the Innovation Hub at Guy's Cancer Centre marked a significant moment for King's College London. It showcased the incredible work being done to tackle cancer from every angle, from early diagnosis to the latest treatments.

Scientists at the Hub are working across disciplines, using everything from data science to genetics. Their goal is to bring cutting-edge research directly into patient care.

The Hub is strategically located right above a chemotherapy village. This allows researchers to analyse patient samples instantly.

This means each patient's cancer can be understood precisely. It helps ensure they receive the most effective, personalised therapy.

Professor Shitij Kapur, Vice-Chancellor & President of King’s, said: “It was an honour to welcome His Majesty to the Innovation Hub. We were privileged to highlight the incredible research from scientists within the Innovation Hub, from across disciplines, all dedicated to tackling cancer and improving the lives of patients.”

Personalised Treatments and AI Discoveries

Professor Sheeba Irshad showed His Majesty how she's developing new immunotherapy treatments. These are for breast cancers that don't respond to standard chemo or radiotherapy.

The King also saw how advanced data science and AI are being used. This helps discover trends, improve diagnosis accuracy, and find new drug targets.

Professor Anita Grigoriadis explained how she's using AI to guide drug discovery. She highlighted the Hub's impact on industry and the economy.

Professor Sheila Singh, Professor of Neuro-oncology and Neurosurgery, King's College London, added: “Innovation really is the key word; King’s is leading the way in rethinking how we treat cancers, putting patients at the centre of everything we do.”

The visit also highlighted advances in surgical technology. A robot used in urological surgery was demonstrated, enabling smaller, more precise incisions.

Patients at the Heart of Innovation

The tour concluded with His Majesty meeting patients undergoing treatment. These are the very people who could benefit from the discoveries made at the Innovation Hub.

Professor Graham Lord said: “The Innovation Hub is part of King’s College London’s diverse cancer research ecosystem, which spans fundamental science, clinical trials, and improving patient care – underpinned by world-class teaching, internationally-recognised research and partnerships across the NHS, government and industry.”

The visit was marked by the unveiling of a plaque by His Majesty. It celebrates the ongoing commitment to fighting cancer.
