Doctors and nurses in South-West London are set to get a major boost in their careers thanks to a new £700,000 funding package. City St George’s, University of London, is part of a significant investment from the Medical Research Council (MRC) aimed at strengthening clinical research across the UK.
The funding will help around 200 clinicians combine their demanding hospital roles with vital research. This initiative, involving over 50 research organisations and 60 NHS partners, aims to remove barriers that often prevent talented medical professionals from pursuing research.
City St George’s is a key partner in the South-West London Regional Account for Clinical Researchers (RACR) consortium. This collaboration, which includes St George’s, Epsom and St Helier Hospital Group (gesh) and Imperial College London, will receive £700,000 over two years.
Clinical researchers are essential for bringing new medical discoveries from the lab to the bedside. They develop new treatments and improve health services, ensuring patients benefit from the latest medical advances. However, many face significant challenges balancing research with their clinical duties.
Dr Jeremy Isaacs, Academic Director for Clinical Research at SHMS, said: “I’m delighted that the South-West London Regional Account for Clinical Researchers has been funded by the MRC."
He added that the funding will support clinical academics at crucial career stages. This includes helping those nearing the end of their training to continue research and prepare grant applications. It will also allow NHS clinicians with promising ideas to dedicate time to research.
Professor Steve Gillard, Associate Dean for Research and Innovation for SHMS, highlighted the importance of the award. He stated: “This important award furthers SHMS strategic ambition to build our clinical and academic partnerships, and support clinical academic career development along the whole training pathway.”
The programme is a four-year pilot. It aims to gather evidence on the best ways to support clinical researchers regionally. This will help shape future efforts to strengthen the UK's research workforce and ensure continued benefits for patients and the NHS.
