Police in Lambeth are stepping up efforts to combat a surge in bike thefts, with a dedicated event planned near a prominent local landmark. Officers will be on hand to offer a vital service to cyclists in the borough to help secure their property.
The Metropolitan Police will be offering a free bike marking service to help reduce the number of bicycles stolen in the local area. This initiative aims to deter criminals and increase the chances of recovered bikes being returned to their rightful owners. The event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 30 June at 12:30. Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) officers will be using BikeRegister, the UK's national police-approved cycle database, to apply tamper-proof, visible security marks to bicycle frames on site.
Bicycle theft remains a persistent issue across inner London transport corridors and medical campuses. Recent figures indicate that the London region experiences roughly 1.6 bicycle thefts per 1,000 people, representing a significant proportion of the national total. In Lambeth specifically, high-density areas around commuter hubs and public buildings are frequently targeted by opportunistic thieves. The Metropolitan Police are urging residents to take advantage of this opportunity to make their property a harder target. Cyclists are encouraged to bring their bikes to the designated location by the main cycle racks situated directly in front of the St Thomas' Hospital reception area, opposite the Houses of Parliament.
While visible security marking acts as a strong deterrent, the Metropolitan Police advise cyclists to adopt a multi-layered approach to security: Double Lock: Always use two high-quality locks, ensuring at least one is a heavy-duty D-lock certified by Sold Secure. Lock It Right: Secure the frame and both wheels to a solid, immovable metal cycle stand, keeping the lock taut and off the ground to prevent thieves from using sledgehammers or angle grinders. Remove Accessories: Take detachable items such as lights, digital speedometers, and quick-release saddles with you when leaving the bike unattended. For further crime prevention advice, residents can visit the Metropolitan Police website or the official Police.uk site.
