Two men have been arrested after a brazen early morning burglary at a flat in Camberwell, South London, highlighting ongoing concerns about residential crime in the borough.

The Camberwell Road Flat Break-In

A flat in Bishopsmead, on Camberwell Road, was targeted in the early hours of May 27th, 2026. Access was gained through an open kitchen window. The occupants were awoken by a crashing noise at approximately 03:30am.

Upon investigating, they discovered their home had been burgled. Stolen items included multiple passports and electrical goods, notably a laptop. The victim managed to track the laptop, leading them to a location where a group of males were present.

The victim flagged down a passing police car to report the situation. Officers initiated a chase and subsequently arrested two males. The stolen items were also recovered.

Southwark Safety and Crime Prevention Advice

Southwark, like many London boroughs, faces challenges with residential crime. Recent data from the Office for National Statistics indicates a concerning trend in burglaries across the capital. In the last quarter, Southwark experienced a 10% rise in residential burglaries compared to the previous period.

The Metropolitan Police are urging residents to remain vigilant, especially during warmer weather. "Burglars will take advantage of this hot weather and will use open windows to burgle properties with the tenants sleeping inside," a police spokesperson stated. The best advice would be to lock windows when you go to sleep and use alternative methods to cool your room down.

Residents are also encouraged to register valuable items for free with http://www.Immobilise.com. This allows serial numbers to be logged on a secure database, aiding in the tracing and recovery of stolen property. Using free tracker apps for phones and laptops is also recommended.

For further support and advice on preventing burglaries, residents can visit the Metropolitan Police's official website or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
