Knife Man Rescued from Thames Foreshore

June 4, 2026

Brave Met Police officers have successfully brought a tense situation under control on the River Thames foreshore near Woolwich Pier, rescuing a vulnerable man who was threatening the public with a knife.

Tense Standoff Near Woolwich Pier

Last Wednesday, officers were alerted to reports of a man armed with a knife posing a threat to the public. A comprehensive search led officers to the riverbank close to Woolwich Pier.

They descended onto the foreshore and calmly engaged with the individual. The situation was safely de-escalated, and the man was detained.

As the usual route off the foreshore was no longer safe, support was requested from the Met's specialist marine policing unit. A police boat was deployed for safety cover.

A second, shallow-draft boat then manoeuvred close to the riverbank. This allowed officers and the detained man to be safely brought off the treacherous foreshore.

The man was experiencing a mental health crisis and had sustained self-harm injuries. His safe resolution and subsequent medical care were attributed to the swift actions and teamwork of all involved.

Thames Foreshore Dangers and Greenwich Safety

This incident starkly highlights the inherent risks associated with the River Thames foreshore. Uneven terrain, hidden hazards, and rapidly changing tides can quickly create dangerous conditions.

According to Police.uk data for SE18 (Woolwich), there were 2,850 reported crimes in the last recorded month, with violence against the person being a significant concern. In Greenwich Borough, official statistics show a 10% increase in violent crime over the past year, with 2,500 incidents recorded.

The Met Police offer extensive safety advice for Londoners, including remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activity. For those struggling with their mental health, the Samaritans are available 24/7 on 116 123.
