Croydon Council has successfully prosecuted AA Chicken World Ltd., located at 67 High Street, South Norwood, resulting in a £25,000 fine for significant food safety failings. The company pleaded guilty to multiple food safety offences, with its director, Tharshan Makenthiram, also admitting guilt and facing a total penalty of £3,827, which included a fine, costs, and a victim surcharge.
The prosecution followed initial inspections by Croydon Council's food safety team, which uncovered a range of critical issues at the premises. Inspectors found a dirty food storage fridge, incorrectly stored food, and a dirty microwave. Staff demonstrated a lack of basic food safety knowledge. A subsequent visit revealed persistent problems, including the continued presence of a dirty fridge, a lack of food labelling, mouse droppings on counter shelves, and staff exhibiting a poor understanding of cross-contamination risks. Despite the service of Hygiene Improvement notices, the business operator failed to implement the necessary changes.
The Council stated that the decision to prosecute was made due to the business's failure to establish a system for controlling food risks and to adequately train its staff. Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon, commented on the council's stance, stating, "Keeping residents safe is a priority and we have a zero-tolerance approach to businesses that put public health at risk." He added, "Food businesses have a legal responsibility to meet hygiene standards. Our food safety team works with businesses to help them improve, but where serious failings are ignored, we will not hesitate to take enforcement action." Mayor Perry emphasised that the prosecution sends a clear message that non-compliance with food safety laws will result in consequences.
