King's College London gets £2m boost for vital end-of-life care research

June 17, 2026

Getting the best possible care when facing a life-limiting illness is something everyone deserves. Now, King's College London is set to boost that support even further thanks to a significant funding injection.

Millions for better care

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Policy Research Unit (PRU) in Palliative and End of Life Care, based at King's College London, has been awarded an extra £2 million. This funding will keep their important work going for another two years, until December 2028.

This unit is all about making sure policymakers have the evidence they need to improve care for children and adults with serious illnesses. It also supports their families and carers, right through to bereavement.

Impact on policy

The research from the unit has already had a real impact. It's been used to inform government policy, including the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.

Professor Katherine Sleeman, Director of the PRU, highlighted the importance of their work. "The additional funding will enable the PRU to continue to deliver impactful research aligned with policy priorities," she stated.

The unit has also focused heavily on care for babies, children, and young people. This includes studies on shared decision-making for critically ill children.

Professor Fliss Murtagh, co-Director, added that the funding is crucial. "This is especially important in light of the NHS's 10-Year Plan and the Modern Service Framework for Palliative Care and End of Life Care," she explained.
