Sydenham Station Approach to host new summer night market

July 1, 2026

Lewisham Council is introducing a new night market to Sydenham this summer, scheduled to run every Friday from July 17 to September 18.

The market will be situated along a car-free section of Sydenham Station Approach, operating between 5pm and 10pm. This initiative aims to establish Sydenham as a popular destination for summer evenings.

The Sydenham Night Market is one of 15 projects selected for the Greater London Authority’s Summer Streets programme. This programme encourages outdoor dining and events, with support for extended trading hours. Lewisham Council is among 13 boroughs that have secured funding from the Mayor of London's £500,000 initiative. This fund is intended to promote al fresco dining, support local businesses, and foster a vibrant summer atmosphere across the capital. The market will be operated by the Food Market Company, which also organises markets in Catford, Lewisham, and Beckenham Place Park.

Councillor Shireen Asaw, Cabinet Member for Business, Workers and Skills, commented on the new venture. "Lewisham is known for our incredible food and drink scene, and this brand new night market is a great way to showcase local businesses and traders, attract visitors to the area and create an evening destination for the warmer months," she stated. "We are committed to helping our high streets thrive and strengthening the local economy, and this project is part of our work to encourage more people to discover everything the south of the borough has to offer."

Funding and Context

The Sydenham Night Market is supported by funding from the Mayor of London's office as part of the Greater London Authority's Summer Streets programme. This programme aims to boost outdoor dining and events across London. While specific details on the exact amount allocated to the Sydenham market were not provided, the overall fund for the Summer Streets programme totals £500,000, distributed across 13 boroughs. This funding is intended to support businesses and enhance the vibrancy of London's public spaces during the summer months. The decision to create a car-free space for the market aligns with broader urban strategies to promote pedestrianisation and create more accessible public areas. Historically, Sydenham Station Approach has seen various community events, and this market seeks to build upon that by creating a regular, attractive evening offering.
