PRUH Haematology Inpatient Care Moves to King's College

July 2, 2026

PRUH haematology care changes will consolidate specialist inpatient services at King's College Hospital.

The centralisation scheme marks a structural shift in how complex blood cancer treatments are managed across South East London, shifting overnight beds to a single regional centre of excellence.

Specialist Inpatient Haematology Care Moves to King's College Hospital

King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has announced changes to haematology cancer care at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) in Farnborough, Kent. Specialist inpatient haematology cancer care will be brought together entirely at King’s College Hospital in Denmark Hill. This move follows extensive engagement sessions with patients, families, and regional healthcare stakeholders.

The decision aims to support equity of access to specialist haematology cancer care for all local patients across the borough networks. It is also intended to provide faster, integrated access to cutting-edge treatments and advanced clinical trials. A significant proportion of local patients already routinely transfer to King's College Hospital for highly complex, specialist molecular treatments.

New Haematology Day Unit Established at PRUH

A dedicated Haematology Day Unit will be established on-site at the PRUH to support ambulatory patients. The existing Chartwell ward will be repurposed to provide this vital service. Patients accessing emergency and planned haematology care will be seen directly at the new unit.

Outpatient haematology care will continue at the PRUH as it does currently, ensuring routine consultations remain local. Urgent and emergency haematology care will also remain at the PRUH, supported by an on-site specialist triage presence. The dedicated Day Unit is expected to improve patient waiting times and reduce unnecessary overnight admissions.

Dr Roopen Arya, Clinical Director for Haematological Medicine at the Trust, stated, "We believe these changes are better for patients and build on existing arrangements whereby patients in Bromley and nearby areas requiring specialist haematological care are already seen at King’s College Hospital, a specialist centre for haematological care."

He added, "Haematological cancer care has advanced significantly in recent years, and the evidence shows that concentrating specialist inpatient care in specialist centres helps to improve clinical outcomes for patients."

The Trust is developing a detailed implementation plan. The aim is to make these changes fully operational by Autumn 2026.

Regional Cancer Trends and Service Frameworks

In England, there are approximately 36,000 new cancer diagnoses each year. Haematological cancers, including leukaemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, account for around 10% of these total diagnoses. The NHS Long Term Plan aims to improve five-year cancer survival rates and patient experience through strategic service integration and rapid access to specialist centres.

The restructuring across the King's College Hospital network mirrors a broader national move toward consolidating high-risk medical procedures. By clustering multi-disciplinary medical teams, critical care infrastructure, and advanced laboratory tools at primary regional hubs like Denmark Hill, the local authority aims to drive down post-operative complications and optimize daily nursing ratios.
