Bromley fly-tipping: Man fined £1,555 for dumping furniture

A Bromley man has been fined £1,555 for fly-tipping furniture near recycling banks in Plaistow Lane, Bromley. The incident, captured on CCTV in October 2025, involved large items of furniture being unloaded from a rented van and left beside recycling facilities.

Prosecution follows illegal dumping

The London Borough of Bromley has successfully prosecuted Brendan Nicholas Daley, of Glenure Road, Eltham, for the illegal dumping of waste. Mr Daley appeared at Bromley Magistrates' Court on 14 July 2026, where he pleaded guilty to the offence under Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. The court ordered him to pay a fine of £825, a victim surcharge of £330, and prosecution costs of £400, totalling £1,555. The prosecution followed an investigation after the hirer of the van involved failed to pay a Fixed Penalty Notice, despite being granted an extension.

Council's commitment to tackling waste

A council spokesperson stated that prosecution is a last resort but emphasised that dumping furniture or other items at recycling banks or elsewhere is unacceptable. The spokesperson highlighted that such actions are not only unsightly and potentially dangerous but also deter residents from using the recycling facilities. Residents are reminded that unwanted bulky household items can be taken to the council's Reuse and Recycling Centre in Beckenham or the weekend centre on Baths Road, by booking an appointment. Alternatively, a collection service for bulky items can be booked directly through the council. Businesses are also advised to consult the council website for information on responsible waste disposal. The offence occurred on 11 October 2025, with the Fixed Penalty Notice issued on 7 November 2025.
