Lambeth Council is implementing measures to protect its council homes and ensure equitable access for residents in genuine housing need. The local authority has joined a national campaign aimed at combating tenancy fraud and safeguarding social housing stock.

New Partnership to Combat Illegal Subletting

As part of this initiative, Lambeth Council has entered into a data-sharing agreement with the online rental platform Airbnb. This partnership, also involving other councils in London, Edinburgh, and Birmingham, will enable the identification of council properties that may be illegally sublet through short-term rental channels. By cross-referencing Airbnb listings with its own housing records, the council can now investigate suspected cases of tenancy fraud more effectively.

Councillor Pete Elliott, Cabinet Member for Housing, emphasised the importance of this measure. "Council housing is a precious public asset that should be used fairly and not exploited for private profit," he stated. "Protecting these homes is essential if we are to maintain confidence among our residents in the fairness and integrity of the housing system." With over 30,000 households on Lambeth's housing register, the council highlights the critical need for social housing to serve its intended purpose.

Residents Urged to Report Suspicious Activity

The issue of council properties being advertised on short-term rental platforms was recently discussed at a meeting of Lambeth’s Housing Scrutiny Sub-Committee. Lambeth Council is appealing to residents to remain vigilant and report any instances of suspected unlawful subletting. Potential indicators include the recent installation of key lock boxes where there is no apparent operational or care-related necessity, or a pattern of frequent occupant changes.

Residents are advised not to approach individuals occupying these properties directly, as they may have rented the accommodation in good faith and be unaware of any fraudulent activity. Concerns should be reported to the council for appropriate investigation by its Counter Fraud team. Reports can be submitted confidentially.
