An urgent animal welfare alert has been issued for Lewisham after a stray cat, known as King, was rescued in a critical condition. Residents are urged to be vigilant regarding local wildlife interactions and consider supporting animal welfare organisations.
King, a known stray in the area, was discovered on 7th April, unable to move after an encounter with two foxes the previous day. He presented with wounds to his face and neck, alongside signs of paralysis from trauma affecting his neck downwards. The Celia Hammond Animal Trust team acted swiftly, providing emergency care, pain relief, and anti-inflammatories. King received round-the-clock nursing, including gentle hand-feeding and regular turning.
Despite his initial shyness and fear, King has shown remarkable strength. He is now eating well, accepting gentle strokes, and has regained the ability to use the toilet independently. His progress over 15 days has been significant, and a full recovery is hoped for. King still requires further treatment, including neutering and microchipping, with his care costs currently estimated between £300 and £400.
If you encounter an injured or distressed animal, it is crucial to contact a local animal welfare organisation or a veterinary professional immediately. For out-of-hours emergencies, Elizabeth Street Veterinary Clinic in Belgravia offers 24-hour emergency care for pets across Central and South London.
They recommend calling ahead on 020 7730 9102 before bringing an animal in, allowing their emergency team to prepare for the pet's needs. The Celia Hammond Animal Trust also operates a veterinary clinic in Lewisham, providing low-cost services and emergency care during their operational hours.
The Celia Hammond Animal Trust has a significant presence in Lewisham, operating a rescue centre and veterinary clinic at 233 / 235 Lewisham Way, SE4 1UY. Established in October 1995, their Lewisham branch was the country's first low-cost neutering and vaccination clinic. They are a non-destruction charity dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming unwanted, abandoned, and stray cats in London and the South East. Their work is vital in managing the welfare of urban wildlife and stray populations within the borough.
The Celia Hammond Animal Trust relies on public donations to continue its life-saving work. Sharing King's story helps raise awareness of the charity's efforts and the animals in their care. Residents can support cats like King by donating directly to the Celia Hammond Animal Trust. Their Lewisham Rescue Centre is open for visitors every Saturday and Sunday afternoon between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
