A blaze has ripped through a Brixton flat, with firefighters issuing a stark warning about the dangers of lithium batteries. The incident occurred on Loughborough Park in the borough of Lambeth.

Loughborough Park Flat Fire Under Control

Part of a four-roomed flat on the second floor was damaged by the fire. Thankfully, there were no reports of any injuries. The fire is believed to have been accidental.

The cause is thought to be a lithium battery pack. Firefighters were called at 16:16 and the fire was under control by 18:03. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Brixton, Peckham and Clapham attended the scene.

Lambeth Safety: Lithium Battery Dangers

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson stressed the significant energy stored in lithium batteries. "If that energy is released in an uncontrolled way, then a fire or explosion may result," they stated. Faults can occur if batteries are overheated, crushed, penetrated, or overcharged.

Lambeth, the borough where Brixton is located, saw a 10% increase in accidental dwelling fires in the year ending March 2023, according to the Office for National Statistics. This highlights a growing safety concern.

The Brigade advises using only correct, official chargers from reputable sellers. Unplug chargers when finished and avoid leaving them unattended or charging while people are asleep. Protect batteries from being knocked around.
