Lambeth Council Pauses Plans to Close Dementia Centre

June 3, 2026

Lambeth Council has announced an immediate pause to its plans to close the Central Hill Dementia Day Centre. The decision, confirmed on June 2, 2026, halts all closure activities and redundancy processes while the council undertakes a detailed review of the proposal and explores alternative options. The centre continues to operate and accept new referrals.

Community Concerns Lead to Review

The pause follows significant concerns voiced by residents, families, staff, trade unions, and campaigners regarding the proposed closure. Leader of Lambeth Council, Cllr Martin Abrams, stated that listening to these concerns was paramount. "This pause will allow us the time and space needed to properly review the proposal and to assess every available option," Cllr Abrams said. He emphasised the vital support the centre provides to individuals living with dementia and their loved ones, underscoring the need for a thorough review before any final decisions are made.

Commitment to High-Quality Support

Cllr Jeremy Isaacs, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care (job-share), echoed this sentiment, stating that people living with dementia deserve access to high-quality, compassionate support within their communities. "The decision to pause the closure plans is an important step that will allow us to undertake a thorough review of all possible options," Cllr Isaacs commented. The council plans to engage closely with staff, trade unions, service users, families, and health partners during this review period. Alternative funding arrangements will also be examined. Further updates are expected as the review progresses.
