A large fire ripped through a restaurant and nightclub on Croydon High Street last night, prompting a massive response from the London Fire Brigade. Emergency services rushed to the scene as flames engulfed part of the building.
Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters tackled the blaze. The incident occurred at a commercial property on Croydon High Street. Part of an external store room connected to the main building at the rear was damaged by fire.
Station Commander Steve Howlett, who was at the scene, stated: "Croydon High Street was closed to traffic whilst we worked to make the scene safe and we urged people to avoid the area where possible." The Brigade was called at 20:32 and the fire was under control by 21:43.
Fire crews from Croydon, Wallington, Norbury and surrounding fire stations attended the scene. As a precaution, firefighters removed and cooled five gas cylinders. This was done because some cylinders can explode when exposed to heat.
There were no reports of any injuries during the incident. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
Recent crime statistics for Croydon show a concerning trend in arson. In 2023, there were 1,015 recorded incidents of arson in the borough, a 10% increase compared to the previous year, according to Home Office data. This highlights the importance of vigilance within the community.
The Metropolitan Police offer advice on fire safety and crime prevention. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the police by calling 101. In an emergency, always dial 999. For those wishing to report information anonymously, Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111.
