A major fire ripped through a tenth-floor flat in North Woolwich last night, forcing a massive response from the London Fire Brigade and leaving residents shaken.

Rymill Street Blaze Engulfs Tenth-Floor Flat

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were scrambled to Rymill Street in North Woolwich following a 999 call at 22:32 on Thursday. Most of a three-roomed flat on the 10th floor was engulfed by flames. Firefighters worked swiftly to lead four people to safety from the burning building.

Newham Safety Concerns and Fire Prevention Advice

The incident in Newham comes as the borough recorded a 10% increase in residential fires in the year to March 2024, with 1,070 incidents compared to 973 the previous year, according to the London Fire Brigade's latest statistics. The London Fire Brigade offers crucial safety advice: "Make sure you have a working smoke alarm on every level of your home. Test them monthly." Support for Affected Residents

Around 100 residents were evacuated from their homes and taken to a local rest centre. Five people were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
