Croydon's iconic Vue cinema in the Grants Entertainment Centre has officially closed, leaving many South London residents devastated and questioning the future of the town centre's entertainment offerings.
The sudden closure has sparked an outpouring of nostalgic memories and frustration online over the loss of a convenient local amenity.
The Vue cinema, a 10-screen multiplex located on Croydon High Street, ceased operations on Thursday, 9th April 2026, after more than two decades of serving the community. Originally opening as Warner Village Croydon Grants in 2000, the cinema was a long-standing fixture within the historic Grants building.
The closure is largely attributed to the building's new owners, MGI Holdings, who acquired the property in January 2026 and are reported to have made tenancy unaffordable due to increased rents. This decision has been described by local campaigners as the result of a property developer with "no apparent interest in cinema acquiring the building".
The news has hit South Londoners hard, with many taking to social media to share their fond memories and express disappointment.
One local resident recalled being "kicked out once" for talking too much before a film, while another shared the special experience of taking their two-year-old to see his first film there, noting how the child still points and says "cinema, daddy" when passing the building.
A South Londoner lamented the closure as "genuinely heartbreaking and all because of corporate greed," expressing reluctance to travel to the alternative Vue at Valley Park due to the challenging journey by public transport.
Another resident discovered the closure unexpectedly, stating, "This is how I find out it's closed!" The cinema was also the setting for significant personal milestones, with one person remembering their "first proper date" there and another their "second date with my husband".
A former employee, who worked there for four years, described the cinema as having "the most life" despite its dated technology and cleanliness issues, adding that they were "sad I wasn’t able go back and watch one last movie and say a proper goodbye".
The closure of the Vue cinema in Grants represents a significant blow to Croydon's town centre and its night-time economy. For many, its central location made it an easily accessible hub for entertainment, fostering a sense of community and providing a convenient option for spontaneous outings.
The nearest alternative, Vue Purley Way, is approximately 2.5 miles away, a distance many residents find inconvenient and difficult to reach via public transport, especially for families or those with mobility issues.
This shift places an added burden on commuters and could deter people from visiting the town centre, potentially impacting surrounding businesses. Local politicians, including MP Sarah Jones and mayoral candidate Rowenna Davis, have written to Vue and the new building owners to express their dismay and seek a review of the decision, highlighting that the cinema was a "real centre for fun, community and memories".
Croydon's Mayor Jason Perry also acknowledged the closure as "deeply disappointing," noting that cinemas are "anchors for our town centres" and their loss reduces footfall and weakens nearby businesses.
