Man rescued after fire breaks out at Battersea flat

April 23, 2026

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters attended a fire at a property on Robertson Street in Battersea on Tuesday evening, 21 April 2026. The blaze broke out in a three-storey terraced house that had been converted into residential flats, with significant damage sustained to a first-floor studio unit.

Rescue and Emergency Response

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was alerted to the incident at 19:35. Control Officers mobilised crews from the Battersea, Chelsea, and Brixton fire stations to the residential street. Upon arrival, breathing apparatus crews entered the smoke-filled property and successfully led one man to safety from the first floor. He was immediately assessed at the scene and left in the care of the London Ambulance Service (LAS).

The rescue operation was concluded swiftly, with the fire officially extinguished by 20:12. Robertson Street remained partially blocked during the operation as crews utilised hydrants to dampen down the studio flat and prevent the fire from spreading to the upper floors or neighbouring terraced units.

Investigation and Smoking Safety

A preliminary investigation by fire officials indicates the blaze is believed to have been caused by the unsafe disposal of smoking materials. Robertson Street, a dense residential area within the Queenstown ward of Battersea, contains several older properties converted into multiple-occupancy flats. Such structures often present unique challenges for fire containment due to internal modifications.

In response to the incident, the LFB has reiterated its safety advice for smokers living in high-density housing. This includes ensuring all cigarettes are extinguished completely in heavy, non-toppled ashtrays and avoiding smoking in bed or when tired. Residents in the Battersea area are also encouraged to check that their properties have working smoke alarms on every level, as early detection was a critical factor in this rescue.
