Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters attended a fire on Sunny Bank in South Norwood yesterday evening. A commercial unit, situated within a row of four single-storey units, was partially damaged by fire. There were no reports of any injuries.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) received the first of eight emergency calls at 2251 on 30 April 2026. Control Officers mobilised a significant response, with crews attending from Woodside, Beckenham, West Norwood, Croydon, and Norbury fire stations. Firefighters worked through the night to contain the blaze, which was officially brought under control by 0003 on 1 May 2026.
The fire occurred on Sunny Bank, a road located just off the A213 (Selhurst Road) and in close proximity to South Norwood Lakes and the Crystal Palace Football Club training ground area. The site is a short walk from Norwood Junction Station, a major South London transport interchange.
During the incident, local residents reported a strong smell of smoke across the SE25 area, and some minor road closures were implemented on surrounding residential streets to allow access for emergency vehicles and fire hydrants.
The cause of the fire has been recorded as undetermined following an initial assessment by the Brigade's fire investigators. Commercial property owners in the South Norwood area are encouraged to review their fire risk assessments and ensure that all electrical systems and storage areas are regularly inspected.
