Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a burst 14-inch main on Richmond Hill in Richmond. The fractured water main caused numerous sinkholes and a "major cascade" of water into the road.
Firefighters installed flood barriers and also used around 50 sandbags to divert surface water away from homes. The Brigade's 999 Control officers were called at 2204 on Sunday, 3 May, and crews from Richmond, Kingston, Twickenham, and Heston fire stations were in attendance. The incident was over for fire crews by 0146.
The failure, which occurred in the Hill Rise area, caused significant structural damage to the road surface, including a notable sinkhole outside the Old Vicarage School. Thames Water engineers worked through the night to isolate the damaged pipe, eventually halting the flow of water by approximately 0200 on 4 May.
The repair operation is described as complex, requiring deep excavations and specialist trench support to ensure engineer safety. While the main has been isolated, residents in the TW9 and surrounding areas continue to face fluctuating water pressure. Thames Water has deployed water tankers to maintain the network's supply and is delivering bottled water to vulnerable residents registered on their Priority Service Register.
Richmond Hill and Petersham Road faced immediate closures following the burst, with Hill Rise remaining impassable.
Transport Impact: The number 65 bus route is currently on diversion due to the road damage, though the 371 service is reported to be running normally.
Landmarks: The flooding was most severe near the Old Vicarage School and Glenmore House, affecting a busy residential corridor near Richmond Park and the Terrace Gardens.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time for journeys as the road is expected to remain closed for several days while clear-up and excavation work continues.
