A worrying new bug is on the rise across England, and experts at Kingston University are sounding the alarm. A study has revealed that a sexually transmitted infection called Shigella is spreading rapidly.
Shigella is a type of bacteria that causes diarrhoea, fever, and stomach cramps. It's usually spread through contaminated food or water. However, this particular strain is also being transmitted sexually.
What's particularly concerning is that this Shigella is resistant to common drugs. This means infections could be much harder to treat. The study highlights a significant increase in cases.
"We are seeing a concerning increase in drug-resistant Shigella infections," stated the researchers. This rise is linked to sexual transmission.
Another expert warned, "This is a serious public health challenge that requires urgent attention." The spread is particularly prevalent among men who have sex with men.
Public health officials are urging people to be aware of the symptoms. Practising safe sex and good hygiene are crucial. If you experience symptoms, seek medical advice promptly.
