Four fire engines and approximately 25 firefighters attended a fire at a property on Robertson Street in Battersea on Tuesday evening, 21 April 2026. The incident occurred in a terraced house that had been converted into residential flats, with part of a first-floor studio flat sustaining fire damage.
One man was led to safety from the affected flat by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus. He was immediately assessed at the scene and left in the care of the London Ambulance Service (LAS).The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was alerted to the emergency at 19:35. Control Officers mobilised crews from the Battersea, Chelsea, and Brixton fire stations, who worked swiftly to contain the blaze within the converted property. Through their coordinated efforts, the fire was officially extinguished by 20:12, less than 40 minutes after the initial call.
Fire investigators believe the blaze was caused by the accidental and unsafe disposal of smoking materials. This incident serves as a timely reminder of the dangers associated with cigarettes in residential settings. The LFB recently issued a warning noting that smoking-related fires often see a spike during the warmer months, frequently linked to disposal on balconies or near flammable domestic items.Residents are urged to ensure that all smoking materials are extinguished completely in proper ashtrays and never disposed of in wastepaper baskets. To improve local safety, the Brigade encourages residents to use their online Home Fire Safety Checker to identify potential risks within their own properties.
